Mobility Helps Sports Career Growth

Sports Career Mobility

With mobility, a sports career can flourish. It has often been said that sports is a mobile profession, and all too often people tend to think they will work for the home team and stay there forever.

That does happen in some instances

But more often than not, to get that first job, to move up in sports, to continue to grow – it all takes being mobile. Moving up in one team isn’t always easy, as the promotions are generally limited compared to a major corporation. So being mobile is the usual way to move up.

The Value of Mobility

It enables you to learn from many different people in the industry as well as many different techniques. As I’ve said before, there is no ‘one size fits all’, and mobility lets you learn the many different sizes of how things are done. It broadens your mind and helps you realize there is more than one way to do things.

Being mobile challenges you and helps you to understand and learn from different markets, thus using your gray matter in the best ways possible. It’s not a job but rather a puzzle that you can solve by digging deeper and learning the area, the team, the people, and creating your plan.

Mobility Helps You Build Confidence

With each move you grow…in talent, in knowledge, in learning, and in confidence. You have more to draw from other than ‘Well, this is the way we’ve always done it.’ You now have multiple ways to show how things have been done, and can adjust to what might work best in your new location.

It enables you to bring more value to a team. The more you have grown, the more you have learned, the more value you can bring to another team. If you are a person that likes to make an impact, you will be able to do so easily when you have been mobile in your sports career.

Mobility Makes Things Happen

You can either stay with a team and hope for things to happen, or be mobile and make things happen. It’s like writing your own movie where you are the lead actor. You can either write the script or have someone else write it for you.

It builds relationships and broadens your network. Believe it or not, sports is a small network. The more people you meet, the more people you work with, the stronger your network becomes. You learn from the best, and share with the best…a perfect opportunity!

Betting On Yourself Is Risky… That’s The Point

Being mobile comes with risks…moving out of your comfort zone, being away from that which you know, and moving into the unknown. But if you do your homework before you move, those risks can be calculated and you will start off on the right path. As I started working across the country with different teams, I found it exhilarating. It has been exciting to embrace the unknown, be challenged by those I have worked with, and be forced to think in different ways. I’ve truly grown each time. I was able to become who I am and amass knowledge through the many paths I’ve taken. Had I stayed with the same team, I would not have had that broader knowledge.

There is no time like the present to grow. Where will be YOUR next position?
